  • 8 Benefits of Collagen

Fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity are symptoms commonly associated with aging skin. Most of us dread these things and try our best to slow down the signs of ageing. These symptoms are due to an accumulated environment exposure and a natural decrease in cell renewal. Other signs less often associated with aging are dull, rough, or dry skin.

By using collagen, we are able to target these skin care concerns and dramatically improve the youthful, healthy appearance of skin. Maintaining the amount of collagen is the key to beautiful skin.

Below are eight benefits of collagen and what it could do for you.

    1. Collagen may help reduce the signs of ageing

Skin is supported by the dermis, the collagen-rich, deeper compartment of the skin. Testing has shown that the oral intake of hydrolysed collagen may help to rejuvenate the skin and reduce signs of ageing, basically rebuilding the foundations.

    2. Improves periorbital wrinkling (crow’s feet)

In a study on women with age-related skin changes, a dietary collagen formulation significantly improved periorbital wrinkling, periorbital aging, and overall facial aging. (1).

     3. Increase in skin hydration and smoothness

A 2008 study in Tokyo of 33 women aged 40-59 who took Hydrolyzed Collagen daily for 2 months showed a 91% increase in skin hydration and resilience (2).

Another preclinical study investigated the effects of oral ingestion of hydrolysed collagen on the skin properties of women tending to have dry and rough skin. This study suggested that, with the ingestion of 5g per day over 6 weeks, resulted in the moisture content of the skin, its viscoelastic properties and its smoothness improved. (4).

     4. Suppresses skin damage

Results from a collagen study on skin damage from the sun, suggest that the daily ingestion of collagen peptide suppresses the skin damage induced by repeated UVB irradiation (3).

    5. Improvement in skin function

Studies relating to skin care revealed an improvement in skin function and hydration after Collagen ingestion on a regular basis (5,6).

    6. Enhances the formation of and increases the density of collagen fibrils

It appears that orally ingested hydrolyzed collagen enhances the formation of and increases the density of collagen fibrils and increased fibroblast density (the fibroblasts being the main cells of the dermis, and the ones which produce collagen) (4).

     7. Improves the mechanical strength of skin

Studies show that Hydrolysed Collagen may improve the mechanical strength of the skin by increasing decorin ratio, proteins which interact with collagen and influences collagen fibrillogenesis, thus regulating excessive bundle-like aggregation of collagen (4).

     8. Increases water absorbing capacity of the skin

A recent collagen study carried out a double blind test in order to examine the effects of collagen intake on skin hydration. Female volunteers consumed a drink containing collagen or placebo every day for 2 months. Results showed an increase in water absorbing capacity of the collagen-ingesting group was larger than that of the placebo group at 1 month, and the difference became larger between the collagen group and the placebo group when the test period was extended to 2 months (4).

  • How to Avoid Toxic Substances Used in Conventional Beauty and Skin Products

Products we use almost everyday, the conventional skin, personal and hair care products contain chemicals which cause a range of health issues. Some of the chemicals found in these products are; TEAs, DEAs, Sulfates, Glycols, Parabens, Synthetic and Artificial ingredients, Ethoxylates, Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde derivatives. A large number of toothpastes, mouthwash / mouth sprays for example contain Aspartame and Triclosan.

Research is showing that health issues from these chemicals are infertility, skin rashes, cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects and reproductive problems.

So what can you do to avoid these chemicals? There are many non-toxic alternatives in the marketplace these days so there is no excuse not to be using chemical free products in your everyday lives:

    • Eat organic product – minimise or eliminate processed foods.
    • Use only certified organic household, personal, skin, hair care products.
    • Use only certified organic deodorant. Do not use antiperspirants.
    • If you can’t pronounce it, you probably don’t want to put it on your body. Ask yourself, “Would I eat this?”
    • Look for products that are fragrance-free. One artificial fragrance can contain hundreds – even thousands — of chemicals, and fragrances are a major cause of allergic reactions.
    • Pay attention to the order in which the ingredients are listed. Manufacturers are required to list ingredients in descending order by volume, meaning the first few ingredients are the most prominent. If Lavender or Chamomile extract are the last ingredients in a long list on the label, your Lavender and Chamomile body wash isn’t very natural.
    • Buy products that come in either glass bottles or ensure the plastic is Bisphenol A (BPA) free.
    • Purchase certified organic products from companies that are earth-friendly, animal-friendly and green.
    • Purchase either the Chemical Maze Book or the phone app and review all products when you go shopping. It’s a great way to become familiar with the things to avoid.

As each country has different criteria for organic certification, some allowing a margin for non-organic and GMO ingredients it is wise for all parents to read labels and become familiar with these nasty ingredients. If you are not sure which are safe then consult the resources like the Chemical Maze or the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database of products and ingredients.

  • 5 Reasons You Should Use BCAA's

Using a BCAA (Branch Chain Amino Acids, which are Leucine, Iso-Leucine and Valine) supplement is more specific than using a whey protein which provides all 20 amino acids. The 3 aminos used in BCAA formulas require no further breakdown and are readily absorbed.

How do they help with recovery?

Muscle repair and growth are all controlled by HMB, which is a metabolite of Leucine the principle BCAA. HMB is ratio dependent so the more Leucine you consume the more HMB you can create the more muscle you can repair and build.

BCAA’s are easily consumed in your water bottle during the workout and are great for anyone with sensitive digestion. Here are five reasons you should consider using a BCAA supplement.

    1. Fast Absorption

Isolated amino acids will be absorbed into the bloodstream in 20 minutes where they become actively used for their specific purpose.

     2. Very specific protein source for muscle fibre synthesis and repair

If using a product for a specific purpose it is best to get the highest doses possible of these amino acids to achieve the best results.

    3. Easy to consume in water during workouts

Most people are using a drink bottle or shaker during the workout so you just need to add your BCAA formula to it and this may save you needing milk based post workout shake to help start the recovery process.

    4. Lactose free and vegetarian

Isolated amino acids are not sourced from dairy and can be created in a variety of ways from vegetarian sources making them suitable for most people.

    5. Stay refreshed throughout the day with fruit flavours

Most report enjoying the taste of the fruit flavoured amino acids formulas as opposed to the milk based flavours of whey protein, which can leave a slightly sour taste in your mouth.
